Singapore is a multi-ethnic and multicultural society where Chinese, Malay and Indians co-exist beneath the veneer of a western cosmopolitan metropolis. Cultural understanding is crucial in Singapore and we are here to guide you through some basic business manners!

Meetings and greetings

Although Singapore is largely westernised in many aspects, some cultures do preserve their cultural habits.

Chinese greeting

A firm handshake with everyone is common for Chinese at business meetings or social occasions. Some of them may bow slightly as a form of respect and politeness, it is important to return to bow if they initiate it.

Malay greeting

Shaking hands between men are common in this day of age due to westernisation. This gesture might also be known as Salaam. Touching one’s chest after a Salaam with the same gender is a courteous gesture.
Malay Muslim ladies generally prefer not to shake hands or touch males, an appropriate gesture will be placing your hand over your heart and a gentle nod of the head.

Indian greeting

Alike to Malay women, Indian women might prefer not to shake the hands of men. Use the ‘Namaste’ greeting with Indian women, place your palms together with your fingers touching each other and a simple nod will suffice. As for Indian men, a handshake is common and acceptable.

Gift-giving Etiquette

Business gifts are generally not exchanged; however, it might be accepted as a form of respect.

Chinese

It might seem unusual to many but refusing a gift is a normal occurrence, the gift giver will then proceed to insist the gift a couple more times before the receiver finally accepts the gift. This demonstrates that the recipient is not greedy.
Some items to avoid giving because of Chinese superstitions:

– ❌Scissors and knives (symbolise the severing of the relationship)
– ❌Clocks, handkerchief (usually associated with funerals or death)
– ❌Footwear (resembles the Chinese word of Evil)

Malay

– ❌Never give alcohol as most Malays are Muslim and it is taboo to consume alcohol
– ❌Do not give anything made out of pigskin
– ❌If food is given as a gift, ensure it is Halal

Indian

– ❌Do not wrap gifts in black or white
– ❌Do not give beef as most Indians are Hindus and the Cow is regarded as a holy symbol
– ❌Do not give leather products
– ❌Avoid frangipani flowers as it is used in a funeral wreath

Dress Code

Singapore is hot and humid all year round due to its position on the equator. Thus, the dress code in Singapore reflects its climatic conditions.

Men generally wear long sleeve shirts, trousers and dress shoes. Wearing a tie may be optional and will not seem out of place without it.

Businesswomen tend to wear light-weight attire with a jacket or coat. Women’s makeup or accessories must not be over excessive.

In conclusion, Singapore Business manners can be confusing at times but committing a faux pas without ill-intentions is acceptable. Do make it a thing to learn as you go and ask questions if you are unsure!
