When thinking about beautiful destinations for a summer internship in Asia, most people think of Thailand’s sandy beaches, Singapore’s stunning architecture or Japan’s fascinating culture. But there is one amazing place that is (too) often overlooked: Taiwan.

When Portuguese sailors first saw Taiwan in the 1500s, they dubbed it “Ilha Formosa” – the beautiful island. And with its many national parks and awe-inspiring sceneries, never has a name been more fitting.

But it is not just the landscape that makes Taiwan a dream destination for any traveler’s bucket list. Here are 10 reasons why YOU should visit Taiwan at least once in your lifetime.

1. The Food

The cuisine itself is reason enough to visit Taiwan. Enjoy spicy pork dumplings and beef noodle soup, hearty gua bao or sweet bubble tea. And you will love this combination: Taiwanese food is incredibly tasty and really affordable – a great alternative to home cooking!

2. The People

Taiwanese people are generally extremely hospitable and friendly. Ask for directions on the street and regardless of whether they can speak your language or not, they will gladly help. In fact, many tourists have found that the people were one of the main reasons they loved Taiwan so much.

3. The Night Markets

Taiwan’s bustling night markets are a fascinating fusion of delicious street food and budget-friendly stalls that sell anything and everything. Every major city has at least one – so wherever you might go, you will have the chance to see the cities come to life.

4. The Scenery

Those Portuguese sailors were on to something when they named Taiwan the beautiful island. Home to amazing national parks that boast beaches, mountains, lush tropical forests, and even dormant volcanoes, Taiwan has it all.

5. The Hiking Opportunities

Taiwan, despite its fairly small size, is home to nine national parks. From light treks to serious climbs, there’s no shortage of hiking opportunities throughout the island that offers tourists a glimpse of Taiwan in all its natural glory.

6. The Architectural Landmarks

Taipei was once home to the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101, which continues to attract huge numbers of tourists. But it is by far not the only architectural masterpiece: From shoe-shaped churches to stained glass domed subway stations, there’s an abundance of unique buildings to explore!

7. The Festivals

While religious festivals are a common occurrence in Taiwan, there are also many other festivals held throughout the region that capture the imagination of travellers.

In fact, no matter when you are visiting the island, there’s a chance that your trip will coincide with at least one major festival.

So even if your internship requires you to work during the week, you will have the chance to attend some festivals on the weekends (or many, up to you!).

8. The Hotspring Mania

A favourite Taiwanese pastime is hanging out at the local hot springs. From public (swim wear-allowing) communal pools to nude private baths and even wild hot springs, choices are plenty. Make sure you do not miss out on this unique experience!

9. The Transportation

The subways in Taipei get you pretty much everywhere, plus they are clean and timely – and cheap! If you prefer to get around by bike, Taipei has a bike share program where the first 30 minutes will cost you a mere 5 Taiwan dollars!

10. … and so much more!

Temples, nightlife, crazy themed hotels, great weather, large-scale shopping, out-of-the-ordinary museums, aboriginal culture, fascinating history, and easy communication are just some keywords to show you how much more Taiwan has to offer.
